Questions
What does a compressor do?
It turns down the parts of a sound that are louder than the threshold. The loud and quiet parts end up closer together, so the sound feels steadier and can be turned up more.
Which settings should I start with?
Try the Vocal preset on a voice, or Gentle glue on a full mix. Then lower the threshold until the peak-to-average number drops by a few dB.
